Long-eared owl

I'm thrilled we have a resident Long-eared owl. I've seen him (or her) on three occasions. I'd probably see it more often if I walked to the back of the garden every day. :-)

Apple pie

The herb garden bed is still waiting to be finished. I planted some thyme and oregano that I still had in pots from the old house. I'm not sure they will get through winter. But we haven't had any frost yet, so who knows. Our new bird feeder needs to be repaired too. It crashed over during Friday's storm (windforce 9) and bits of the roof came off. Pity it's not the best weather to work in the garden. Hail storm So, I stayed inside and made apple pie instead. Toasted tomatoes

Last week I sowed some tomato seeds in vermiculite. I put them on a windowsill in our livingroom and checked up on them every other day. Yesterday I saw they had already emerged. Some weren't looking too healthy. In fact, when I took them outside to transplant them, some were even burnt. That's when I realised they might have been in the full sun for too long. I took 6 of the best looking seedlings and put them in their own little pot. Yes, that's a toilet roll. I hope they make it :-) They are Tumbling Tom tomatoes, a trailing variety. The seeds I got are a mix of red and yellow tomatoes. In other garden news: We started work on the veranda and the pond. This is our neighbour Rob, destroying our grass. Weekend break

We went away for the weekend. It was high time for a short break, so we spent the weekend on the island of Schiermonnikoog , which is named after its first known owners, the monks of Klaarkamp Abbey, a Cistercian monastery on the mainland. [Wikipedia] We actually bumped into a couple of monks. Seems a small cluster (or is it herd?) of Trappist monks from an abbey in Overijssel, are looking for a new (and smaller) place to settle. So after 400 years Schiermonikoog might have resident monks again. Hope they brew great beer . :-)
